Bill Error

I got a bill the other day from the Colorado DMV for $.50.  I didn’t know why.  So I read the bill and as it turns out I was being charged .$50 for traveling in the carpool lane going north on I-25.  I had two passengers in my car the day I drove that stretch of highway, which should have meant that it was free for me to use.  But I got a bill anyway.

I contemplated for a bit what was the right thing to do.  Do I pay the $.50 because that should be really easy to do, or do I fight city hall and not pay it because I shouldn’t have to.  Anyway, I chose to fight city hall via email, and I wanted to post the email exchange to this blog because I thought I was pretty

funny.

Below is the bill, but read the email from the bottom up.

I’ll let you know when this gets resolved.

Hi Lindsay,

So I am a little confused.  My bill was sent to me and it was for $.50, and I was traveling in the HOV lane on this date, but I had more than 2 people in the car, so I shouldn’t have gotten a bill at all correct?  Or am I mistaken?

I don’t really understand this part:

> In the future you will want to remain in the lane on the "west side" when using the HOV lane for car-pooling (with two or more people in the vehicle), and when driving a motorcycle. The Eastern lane will always be the EXpressToll lane. This lane is for people who have EXpressToll transponders (prepaid toll passes) in their vehicles and wish to use the lane while driving through as a single person.

I didn’t see a sign indicating this, or that I had to stay in a single “west side” lane.

So I guess my problem is this…either I shouldn’t have got then $.50 bill, in which case filling out a form, and sending it in with a $.42 cent stamp hardly seems logical, since it will only save me 8 cents, and if I factor in time wasted on this endeavor the cost it will be much more…OR I should have received the fine because I didn’t read the sign that said I should stay in the “West Side” lane.

So which is it?

So I hope you are seeing where I am coming from.  Obviously I can pay the $.50, but I don’t feel as though I should have to, or have to fill out a form and mail it in if what I did was not in the wrong.  It is the principle Lindsay, and I am a man of principles.

P.S. You should see if you can change your agent number to 007.

Dear Mr. Mozealous,

A copy of the HOV I-25 Affidavit has been attached to this e-mail. Please print the affidavit and completely fill it in and sign it. The affidavit must be returned to E-470 Public Highway Authority before the due date of your violation.

You may return it to us by mailing it to 22470 E. 6th Parkway, Aurora, CO, 80018 or by faxing it to 303-537-3404. Please make it attention to Management.

Once we have received the affidavit, the violation will be dismissed. Please be advised that this is a one time offer, our offices will not be able to make this offer should you receive another civil penalty assessment.

You can find more information about the EXpressToll pass or the new HOV/Toll lanes on I-25 at www.expresstoll.com. We apologize for any confusion.

Hi Bill,

I received a bill (#1016343494) and I believe it was in error.  I was traveling north bound on I-25 on 11/08/2009, but I was traveling with 2 other people in the car, and as it was the carpool lane I didn’t think I had to pay if I had others in the car.

Anyway, let me know if I am wrong about this.
